Malvern faced an away trip to Hereford to face a team who have been in fine form. 7 from the last 7, including a win against league leaders Ludlow. Malvern were on a five from five run, however, they were aware of a few things. Hereford rarely are not up for this local derby, they have a great home record against Malvern, and the partisan Wye side crowd ensures it is as hostile on the pitch as it is hospitable off it. This was undoubtedly a step up for Malvern in terms of the calibre of the opposition.

Hereford started well and immediately pressed Malvern into defence. They scored first and converted the try. They carried on this pressure with a couple more good chances that they failed to capitalise on.
Malvern took full advantage with Dan Batty at 10 getting into the game and utilising the talented Malvern back line. The first to score was Lewis Hardiman, his try converted by Batty.

In recent years Malvern’s pack has been occasionally overpowered by the likes of Hereford. This season, like today Malvern achieved parity. This was shown by Ant Hitching being next on the score sheet with Batty again converting.

Although playing well it was clear that the next score would be crucial. It came courtesy of Hardiman, converted by Batty.

Half Time Hereford 7 - Malvern 21

Malvern started the 2nd half knowing that sticking to their game plan would be vital if Hereford were not to get back into the game. They kept the pressure on with the forwards creating a great platform for the backs to work with. Fullback Jasper Windsor-Clive was next to benefit with a well-worked try.

Malvern pushed on again with real belief. Connor Giggle added another try to stretch the lead. Batty converted.

Hereford remained in the hunt for a bonus point with another try.

Final Score
Hereford 12 - Malvern 33

Director of Rugby Rob Cook said- “This was a great win, we played well against a well-organised, physical team who have been in fine form. We knew that we couldn’t start as slowly as we did last week.” He went on to say, “The old adage forwards win games, backs decide by how much, has been so true for us this season. It is hard to single anyone out for special praise with such a 1-18 performance today. Our forwards delivered a solid platform that allowed the backs to play good rugby.”

“I also want to give a big shout-out to the performance of our 2nd team who drew 12-12 away against Keresley RFC. A long trip against a tough team with what was a threadbare squad. Well done to all involved”.

Next week is another big test for Malvern, with the visit of league leaders Ludlow to Stadio Spring Lane, it is a 2:15pm kick off.
