This was a huge game for both sides as 2nd played 3rd position in the league. Malvern seconds faced a physically imposing Warley side unbeaten since the opening game of the season.
As it transpired The Vern stepped up and went toe to toe with their Black Country counterparts coming out on top 18 points to 5.
From the start Warley attempted to use their physique advantage to muscle their way deep into the Malvern 22. One move saw the ball whipped smartly across the Warley backs as the Wing dived for the corner a huge Hayes hit cut him into touch. As Malvern found their rhythm moving the ball away from first up hits territory was gained, eventually pressure told and Harris slotted an 11th minute penalty.
Further pressure exerted brought several last ditch high tackles inside the Warley 22. Huge carries from Clarke at the base of the scrum drive the home side further. For all the possession The Vern couldn't cross the line. Finally a clever chip from Sparrey from half way saw Olly Hale speed away from the defensive cover and dive over for the try. Harris converted and Malvern controlled play to see out the half 10 0 up.
The second half saw Warley turn the screw with their tight 5 beginning to dominate the scrum. Their line outs began to click and the tide for long periods turned in their favour. Huge defensive tackles across the field saw the ball come loose over the try line giving Malvern a chance to counter. Pickering made some strong runs whilst carries from the likes of the skipper Marcus Hill saw another momentum shift. Finally after another inspired Sparrey chip, Hill gathered and charged towards the corner from 30 yards out with a superb dive to finish.
With the final minutes approaching a prolonged period of play close to the Malvern try line, finally saw Warley crash over for a try. From the kick off Malvern pressed with seconds ticking away. A cameo from Nicholson on as a late replacement set up a marauding rumble from the Vern pack. The resulting penalty was an easy 3 points for Harris to seal the win.
Malvern stay 3rd level on points with Upton, but now lay poised to potentially climb to the top when they play their game in hand Stourport towards month end.
