Malvern began the year with a home fixture against a tough and improving Silhillians side. The last time these two sides met, Malvern came out on top, therefore, this was set up to be a feisty affair. A huge swathe of people congregated down at Stadio Spring Lane to support Malvern in their post-Christmas game. The 2nd’s were also playing at home today, and they managed to secure an impressive 33-12 win over our near neighbours, Worcester.
Today also marked the 22nd Birthday of our hooker, Glen Potter. Happy Birthday Glen!
Malvern started off lively. Some great hands in the back line saw Dan Batty burst through a gap in the Silhillian’s defence, Batty then offloaded the ball to an oncoming Rob Cook who bundled for the try. Batty kicked the conversion.
The next 15 minutes saw the game get scrappy, neither team managing to hold onto possession for very long. However, against the run of play, Batty anticipated a pass in the visitors back line and intercepted the ball to score under the posts. Batty got the extras.
The Malvern forwards really put in a strong shift today, with many powerful surges sending the Silhillians scrum marching backwards. A penalty off a scrum allowed the home side to kick into the corner for a lineout. A maul was called, Max Richardson then peeled off towards the blindside and shifted the ball out to leave Joe Pritchard with an easy run into the corner. Batty with the conversion. The match then went bad to worse for Silhillians as their scrumhalf was put into the sinbin for a high tackle.
After the break, Malvern secured the bonus point. Richardson sending the ball out to Lewis Hardiman who used his pace to evade the oncoming defence and stepped the last defender to score a fine individual try. Batty secured the two-points. Silhillians then lost another player to the sinbin to make the afternoon even worse for the Solihull side.
Malvern’s scrum asserted its authority all afternoon, as it pushed the Silhillians pack over the whitewash for Richardson to touch down and grab a well-deserved try.
Malvern began to run away with the game when Cook broke through the defence allowing Malvern to put the ball through the hands for Batty to go over for his second of the game. Batty with the extras.
Despite a disappointing outing for Silhillians, they still managed to get a try after some powerful attacking waves, in the end it was a mere consolation.
It was then Malvern who were at the receiving end of a yellow card. Rob Cook getting booked for being offside and then not rolling away from the tackle, which came to the bemusement of the Malvern faithful. However, Malvern managed to wrap up the game in style. A fast-flowing move off the scrum saw Batty secure his hattrick.
Malvern look to carry on their fine form next Saturday as they travel to Southam.
Up The Vern!
