Malvern RFC

Earlsdon 5 - 15 Malvern

Malvern travelled to Earlsdon for their first game after a two week break. It was an extremely wet and cold outing to the Warwickshire city for both supporters and players. The conditions proved to be a decisive factor throughout the game, stopping Malvern from playing their infamous fast-paced running rugby.

Malvern began the scoring through Tom Hale. After the ball was shipped out to the left side, Hale broke several tackles and wrestled over the line for the first points of the game.

Earlsdon were quick to level the score. Some great work from their full-back created a two-on-one for their outside centre to cancel out Hale’s earlier score.

Malvern immediately regained possession from kick-off after some quick thinking from Rob Cook. The ball was then again shipped to the left where Jon Wills raced down the wing and offloaded the ball inside for Max Richardson to secure a try. Cook grabbing the extras.

After the break, the conditions continued to worsen and both teams struggled to keep hold of possession for very long. For the majority of the second half, Malvern had Earlsdon pinned back in their 22. Malvern failed to capitalise after some outstanding defence from the home side.

The gap was then stretched to 10 points after Cook slotted a penalty between the posts to allow some breathing space for the visitors. Earlsdon continued to battle hard until the end but it wasn’t enough to stop the league leaders.

Malvern look to carry on their progression in their league campaign next week at home, as they welcome local rivals Evesham for a huge derby clash.
